Day 03

BOUSSAADA - DJELFA

Djelfa the region includes Paleolithic remains and numerous rock engravings.
Doctor Reboul was the first to report to archaeologists at the beginning of the century, Roman ruins that were rare and unimportant, as regards the number and extent of the posts observed, but very rich in debris of bricks, pottery, fragments of pilasters and columns of country sandstone and written documents, one of which only read: donatus...Annarietana...and Zareris...Elius.
Zaretis attracted attention and we can see the Latin origin of the salt lakes, neighbors of Zahrez.
These ruins have the main interest of noting, with certainty, the southernmost point where the Roman power stopped.

Turkish presence
Algeria (Berberia 1515-1830.

The Turkish authority in the region was limited to levying the tax which depended on the Beylik of the center (TITTERI) whose chief town was MEDEA.

Djelfa is a town located 300 km south of Algiers. The commune is limited to the north by Médéa, to the south by Laghouat, Ghardaïa and Ouargla, to the east by M'Sila, Biskra and El-oued, to the west by Tiaret.

It is the capital of the Ouled Nails, a confederation of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. Their red and black striped tents are easily recognizable in the Algerian highlands.

At an altitude of 1,140 m, it presents a large depression in the Ouled Nails mountains. Djelfa does not only belong to Max AUB, Roger GARAUDY, Fromentin or Étienne DINET through their universal works.

Founded in 1852: mixed municipality (civilian and military) in the form of a French military post, at the crossroads of strategic roads, the city was designed like a camp, with a geometric plan.
The city, which is surrounded by a fortified wall, is cut out by wide avenues at right angles.
An inscription placed above its front door indicates the date of 1852.
Djelfa will be built in forty days, in the months of November and December 1852 by the expeditionary column of General Yousouf, under the command of Marshal RANDON.

At the time, it was a vast main building, raised squarely above an enclosure of low walls. The house of the Bachaga des Ouled-Naïls was set up there with an Arab office. It was at the same time a house of command, a caravanserai and a fortress.

Eugène FROMENTIN exhibited in 1859, a superb painting of the post of Djelfa.

The creation of the town took place on February 20, 1861 by Napoleon III who signed the decree creating a center of 55 fires at a place called "DJELFA" and allocated a territory of 1,775 ha to it.

This area, which receives 300 mm of rain in an average year, is at the limit of cereal growing.
The settlers who held on had to adopt the technique of dry farming (plowing every year; sowing every other year). They were also able to engage in sheep farming.

Le Corbusier would have been inspired by it to build the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel in Ronchamp, near Vesoul. This mosque exudes a strong sense of fullness.
It will continue with the visit of Ghardaïa, this architectural jewel, which is one of the most important cities of the M'Zab pentapolis, built in 1048 by two Muslim saints, the brothers Mohammed and Slimane Ben Yahia. You will visit its Ksar, built at the foot of the mountains overlooking the valley of the M'zab wadi. You will discover the Great Mosque surmounted by its majestic minaret composed of 114 steps like the 114 suras of the Koran, and the mosque of Sheikh Ammi Said: the white mass of this mosque-tribunal, dating from the 12th century, appears on the slope of a large cemetery. Ammi Said, an eminent jurist, decided cases that could not be settled by local religious leaders in their assemblies.

Lunch during visits.

In this holy city, order and discipline reign in respect of the precepts inherited from the Ibadi ancestors. It is the most striking city in the valley.
