The monastery of Tibhirine is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Algiers. Head south of Mitidja and cross the Chiffa gorges in the foothills of the Atlas. You can visit the monks' cells and the outbuildings. Since the death of the seven Trappist monks - a community that lived in close symbiosis with the local population - the activity of the monastery has considerably reduced. Lots of land has been sold. In the garden, under the cover of trees, you will discover the tombs of the brothers Christian, Bruno, Paul, Célestin, Luc, Michel and Christophe.

EXCURSION: THE SECRETS OF THE CASBAH - Unusual visit

The Kasbah, rebellious, is never easily revealed to foreigners passing through. Yet looks and doors know all the secrets. A son of the Casbah invites you to share them.

"Welcome. Walk through the maze of my alleys, enter the stalls, raise your eyes to the wooded vaults of my houses which clash together, refresh yourself at my fountains, listen to my children's joie de vivre. from an alley, like a gift, the sea in the distance.

My doors will open to my inner life. First a patio, a place of life and exchange for families, then dare to climb the stairs to the top of the house. Under the sun and to the sea then appears another Casbah, which from terraces to terraces offers women and lovers a space of freedom. Then take a moment to taste the hospitality of my inhabitants who will make you discover the tastes and scents of our traditional dishes.

Why hide from you that I had a tumultuous past, the fruit of the rebellious character of my children who often sought refuge within my walls. Give a thought to all those who, at the sacrifice of their lives, also enter into my story.

My secrets are countless. Can you discover them? Perhaps in the memories of an old man met by chance or in the meditation of the Mausoleum of Sidi Abderhamane. Welcome."

Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Casbah is now under threat. Coming to discover it helps not to forget it.

- Departure from the hotel at 9:30 a.m.

- Guided tour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Lunch in a traditional house in the heart of the Casbah from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

- Return to the hotel around 4 p.m.

EXCURSION: TIPASA, WEDDING OF CIVILIZATIONS

Exceptional testimony to the meeting of the great Mediterranean civilizations, Tipasa is an invitation to stroll through the streets and buildings of a Roman city of the 2nd century. Here the Berber, Phoenician, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Arab and European civilizations intersect under the olive trees. Albert Camus knew, better than any other, how to celebrate this unique natural and archaeological site.

Short guided walk in the heart of the ancient city of Tipasa. Stroll through its streets to discover the temples, the amphitheater, the fountain, the thermal baths and the Roman villas. Beyond the large basilica overlooking the sea you will discover the moving circular necropolis and the stele in memory of Camus. Here, nothing seems to have changed, in the shade of the Mediterranean vegetation and facing the sea, this city lives.

Departure for lunch in a restaurant facing the sea. Meat and fish grilled in traditional ovens.

Coastal road to Cherchell at the foot of Mount Chenoua offering many panoramic viewpoints. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Cherchell (Antique Caesare), with remarkable mosaics and a superb collection of ancient statues.

Continuation to the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania sometimes called "Tomb of the Christian". Surprising and imposing circular pyramid surrounded by Roman columns which dominates, on one side the fertile plain of Mitidja, and on the other the shores of the Mediterranean.

"In the spring, Tipasa is inhabited by the Gods and the Gods speak in the sun and the smell of absinthes, the silver armored sea, the ecru blue sky, the ruins covered with flowers and the light bubbling in the clusters of stones. (…) Millions of eyes, I knew, contemplated this landscape and, for me, it was like the first smile from heaven. He pissed me off in the deepest sense of the word. He assured me that without my love and that beautiful cry of stone, everything was useless. The world is beautiful, and outside of it there is no salvation. The great truth that he patiently taught me is that the mind is nothing, nor the heart itself. »

Albert CAMUS, “Wedding at Tipaza”
